David Whitesides

Maintenance and Grounds Maintenance Manager

David is a graduate of Cherryville High School and Lenoir-Rhyne University. David has been at St. John’s Lutheran for several years beginning his time as Education and Youth Director. David has been the Maintenance and Grounds Manager for just over two years. David also participates in the daily Ministries of St. John’s.

Pastor G. Scott Homesley

Pastor

Pastor G. Scott Homesley was born and raised in Cherryville, North Carolina, growing up on Mary’s Grove Road. He graduated from Cherryville High School in 1978. Pastor Scott earned his Bachelor of Music Education at Lenoir-Rhyne College (1983). He earned his Master of Divinity from Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary (1996) and was ordained May 31, 1996. Pastor Scott served as an Intern Pastor at Union Lutheran Church in Batesburg-Leesville, South Carolina for three years. His first call was to Our Saviour Lutheran Church in Southern Pines, North Carolina for five years, upon the retirement of the Senior Pastor, The Rev. Dr. David Keck, Scott was called as Senior Pastor (head of staff) at Our Saviour for an additional 10 years. Pastor Scott in 2011 was called to St. John Lutheran Church in Abingdon, Virginia and has served there for just over 10 years. Pastor Scott has been at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Cherryville for 2.5 years.

Pastor Scott is a second career Pastor. Immediately after college he worked two years as a Herdsman on the Cherub Jersey Dairy Farm in the Mountain View area of Hickory, North Carolina. He then became a District Executive for the Piedmont Council, Boy Scouts of America, (Gastonia, NC) for 4 years (Lenoir, NC)_and was promoted to Field Director (Hickory, NC) for an additional 4 years.

Pastor Scott’s wife Robin is currently part-time Teacher of the deaf and hard of hearing. She and Pastor Scott have three adult children and four grand-sons. Nicholas and wife Tawny, James and Blake live in Hickory, NC. Jeremy and wife Ashley, Roan live in Cherryville, NC. Elisa and husband Alex and Everett live in Harrisburg, NC.

BARBARA MCDANIEL

Director of Parish Administration

Barbara arrived at St. John's in 1996 after years at Carolina Freight. Barbara is a graduate of Cherryville High School and Gaston College. She is the mother of two grown children, Kristen Justin. Barbara coordinates the daily office activities at St. John's, work that ranges from finances to food bags, phone calls to bulletins, reception to newsletters, organizing to informing. The list seems endless.

Because she (literally) knows every person who has lived in Cherryville, is currently alive in Cherryville, or yet to be born in Cherryville, Barbara is a wonderful parish and civic resource. Simply said, Barbara is a local celebrity. St. John's is blessed to have her.

KIM HARRIS

Director of Music

Like Barbara, Kim arrived at St. John's in 1996. He is married to the lovely and talented Sallianne, and they have two daughters, Emily and Katie, a son-in-law, grandchildren, and dogs. In addition to church organist and pianist,Kim directs St. John's music programs, including the St. John's Chancel Choir and Handbells

When he is not at St. John's, Kim teaches private piano lessons and enjoys being by the pool. Kim graduated from Lenoir-Rhyne with a degree in music education, and he holds certificates in non-profit management from Duke University and in gerontology from Appalachian State University.
